August - a month with tiredness, sickness (husband in hospital....), but also some lovely trips and fun times in between all the showers. Here's what we've been up to. With lots of photos as always!Read More
Welcome! I'm Nicola, I encourage mums who are struggling with tough times make their home happy. One of my sons has Down Syndrome, my husband has Crohn's disease, and yet - most of the time - our home is a happy place and I'd love to share with you how that looks!
The last week has seen two more stories about Down Syndrome and abortion in the news. Firstly, the news that in Iceland 100% of babies with Down Syndrome are aborted, and secondly a programme in Australia about pre-natal testing and the “profound disability” that Down Syndrome is.
Here are my thoughts on the lies, the statistics and sharing the reality.Read More
Part two of my summer activities series, this time looking at outdoor activities, and my favourite parks! Please share with your local friends and also tell us some of your favourite places to go.Read More
So, today is the first day of the summer school holidays here in Northern Ireland. Most families now have 8 or 9 weeks stretching out in front of them. I’m at home full time with the boys (although Daniel has been out to nursery school most mornings this year) so am used to entertaining young children through the days. But even those of us at home full time normally have a choice of mums and tots groups to go to. And the playparks and libraries are quiet during school time. So I thought I’d write a short post with some ideas of what to do each day – indoor activities and free and paid options too. I’ll do another for outdoor activities including my Top Playparks recommendations (as requested by one of my readers!)Read More
Well, May has been so eventful I had to actually sit down with my journal to work out if everything I remembered had actually happened in May. And I wrote this whole post forgetting it was Colin's birthday in the midst of it all! This hasn’t been a great month in many ways, it has been fantastic in others – not least the gorgeous weather we had! Not all of what happened this month is appropriate to share on here, but it has been a difficult one for our family and when one area of life is difficult it just makes everything else that bit tougher to deal with. Ah May, you have started so wonderfully, after such a cold April too. Were you up to much over Easter? Hopefully the cool weather didn’t disrupt your plans too much – with a later Easter this year I was hoping that our trip to the Lake District might have a few nice days but it was jumper and even coat weather all week!
We’ve had a busy April, here's what we've been up to....Read More
So over Easter we went on an extended family holiday to Center Parcs Whinfell Forest on the edge of the Lake District. Before we went I spent hours, literally, googling “Center Parcs Toddler Ideas” and “Center Parcs Whinfell Forest what to bring” hoping that I’d get some inspiration to ensure we made the most of our week.
So here our my top tips, the other side of our trip!Read More
My 8 week old baby boy nestling in my arms, I walked into my workplace. Pulling a face, a colleague took one look at him in my arms and said "Well, he doesn't look very Down Syndrome-y", and walked away.
Still to this day, the words sting. Do people see my son and assess how Down Syndrome-y he looks?
